Airbnb Cleaning Checklist for Turnovers: Room-by-Room (Free to Copy)

Airbnb Cleaning Checklist for Turnovers: Room-by-Room

Cleanliness is the review category that sinks more Airbnb listings than any other. A single missed hair on a pillow can cost you a star. The fix is not working harder; it is using the same checklist every single turnover, in the same order, so nothing depends on your memory.

Below is a practical room-by-room turnover checklist you can copy into your notes app or print. Adjust it to your property.

Before you start (5 minutes)

  • Open all windows and doors to air the space.
  • Strip all beds and start the first laundry load straight away.
  • Walk through and photograph any damage or missing items before you clean, so you have a record.
  • Check for left-behind belongings and note them.
  • Empty every bin and take the rubbish out.

Bedrooms

  • Fit fresh sheets, pillowcases and the mattress protector if soiled.
  • Check under the bed and in drawers for forgotten items.
  • Dust surfaces, bedside tables and headboards.
  • Wipe light switches and door handles.
  • Vacuum floors, including under the bed.
  • Restock the extra blanket and pillow if you offer them.

Bathrooms

  • Disinfect the toilet, base and behind the seat.
  • Scrub the shower, tub, taps and drain. Remove hair from the drain.
  • Wipe the mirror and sink until streak-free.
  • Replace towels, bath mat and hand towels.
  • Restock toilet paper (always leave a spare roll), soap and shampoo.
  • Mop the floor last, working toward the door.

Kitchen

  • Run or unload the dishwasher and put everything away.
  • Wipe counters, the stovetop, the microwave inside and out.
  • Clear the fridge of anything guests left; wipe the shelves.
  • Check the coffee and tea station and refill basics.
  • Check pots, pans and utensils are all there and clean.
  • Wipe the sink and polish the taps.

Living areas

  • Plump cushions, fold throws, and check between sofa cushions.
  • Dust shelves, the TV and remote (wipe the remote with a disinfectant wipe).
  • Vacuum and mop floors.
  • Reset the welcome area: guidebook, Wi-Fi details and house rules in their usual spot.

Final walkthrough (the 2-minute test)

  • Stand in the doorway as a guest would. What is the first thing you see and smell?
  • Check every light bulb works and every remote has batteries.
  • Test that the Wi-Fi and door lock code are correct.
  • Take 4-5 "ready" photos for your own records.
  • Lock up and mark the turnover as done.

Why a turnover log matters

A checklist tells you what to do. A turnover log proves it was done. Recording the date, the cleaner, the time spent, supplies used and any damage means that if a guest disputes a cleanliness complaint or a deposit claim, you have dated notes rather than a fuzzy memory. It also shows you how long a turnover really takes, which helps you set your cleaning fee fairly. (If you are working out that fee, see our guide on how much to charge for an Airbnb cleaning fee.)

A good log page records:

  • Check-out and next check-in dates
  • Who cleaned and how long it took
  • Linens used and laundry status
  • Supplies that need restocking
  • Damage or maintenance issues spotted
  • Lost and found items

Keep your supplies simple

Pre-pack a "turnover caddy" with a multi-surface cleaner, glass cleaner, disinfectant wipes, microfibre cloths, a scrubbing brush and rubber gloves, so you never hunt for supplies mid-clean. Keep spare linen sets in a labelled bin so you can swap beds in minutes.

A printable version

I made a printable Cleaning Checklist and Turnover Log for hosts, with a log page for every stay plus monthly summaries, maintenance and deep-clean trackers. It is my own product, so take that as a disclosure: you can see it and the rest of the host range on the shop page.

If you are also setting up the guest-facing side, my Airbnb Welcome Book Template (a printable house manual and guest guide) pairs well with it, and the First-Time Airbnb Host Handbook on Kindle covers the rest of hosting from listing to reviews. Both are my own books. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Quick tips from experienced hosts

  • Clean in the same order every time: top to bottom, back to front, dry to wet.
  • Do a "guest eyes" check from the bed, the sofa and the shower.
  • Do a deep clean (oven, fridge, behind furniture, mattress flip) once a month, not just between stays.
  • If you use a cleaner, give them the checklist and the log. Clear expectations beat reminders.

Consistency is what earns the 5-star cleanliness rating. Print the checklist, use it every time, and keep a log.
